SPACE RESEARCH IN INDIA

India is a developing country. Our scientists have made great things possible. In the field of space research the country had great successes.
Space research in India began in 1962. In that year the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station was started. From there sounding rockets were sent into space. India never looked back from then. In the following years a number of rockets and satellites were sent into space.
‘Aryabhatta’ was the first satellite built with native technology. It was launched by a soviet rocket. Many more satellites followed. In 1965 the Space Science and Technology Center was started. In 1969 ISRO was formed under the Department of Atomic Energy. The Space Commission and Department of space came up in 1972.
Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) is meant for educational programmes. These are telecast to six states The Telecommunication department also uses the services of our satellites, Bhaskara I was launched in 1979. lt was usedfor earth observation. ISRO designed this satellite. Then came the Satellite Launching Vehicles and the Rohini Satellite series. The INSAT satellite series met with great success.
In 1984 an Indian, Rakesh Sharma went into space in Soyuz T – Il spaceship of the U.S.S.R. In 1997. Dr. Kalapana Chawla became the first Indian woman to go into space space
