What is First Aid? How it is useful to Bio-Science teacher and write any 5 common laboratory mishaps and their remedies

First Aid: Though almost care and precaution are taken in the maintenance and systematic organization of the practical work, unforeseen accidents may occur in the lab. In such a situation the teacher should not panic, but maintain calm and compose. She should call for immediate medical attention. But before the arrival of medical aid, the teacher should provide first aid to the injured person. The presence of a first aid kit is an essential component of any biology laboratory. The teacher should also be trained in simple first aidtechniques to treat and calm the patient before the doctor arrives.
A first aid box is a box containing the essential things for treating an injured person before the arrival of a medical facility or doctor.
First aid box should contain the following first aid items.
  • Acetic acid
  • Adhesive Tape
  • Bandages
  • Burn Cream
  • Dettol
  • Dressing
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Gentian violet
  • Scissors
  • Safety Pins
  • Tincture Iodine
  • Aspirin
  • Cotton Wool
  • Thermometer
  • Universal Antidote
  • Methylated spirit
  • Vaseline
Some common Laboratory Mishaps and their Remedies:

1. BURNS :
  • Both dry heat or chemicals can cause burns
  • Burns by dry heat (Example: By flame or hot objects) should be treated by applying burnol or sarson oil
  • Burns by Chemicals (Example:Phosphorous and Bromine) should be washed with plenty of water followed by topical application of Vaseline or Burnol. A suitable sterile dressing could also be done.


2. FIRE:
  • If a person’s clothes catch fire, he should be made to lie on the floor in a horizontal position with a blanket wrapped around him. hould be called Splashing the cause body may extinguish the fire but may also with water  severe boils on the body.


3. POISONS:
  • If acid is taken in, drinking plenty of water followed by taking milk of magnesia should dilute its effect.
  • If an alkali is consumed, drinking plenty of water followed by lemon juice should dilute it.



4. EYE ACCIDENTS :
  • Acid in Eye: Wash the eye with plenty of water followed by applying weak solution of sodium bicarbonate.
  • Alkali in Eye: The eye should be washed with plenty of water followed by another wash with 1% boric acid solution.


5. ELECTRICAL SHOCK:
  • In the event of a shock the mains should be switched off at once and any dry stick should be used to pull the person away from the point. A doctor should be called.
