UN issues $951 million appeal for Rohingya refugeesThe United Nations has issued an appeal for 951 million Dollars to meet the needs of nearly 900,000 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. Over the months since the most recent Rohingya influx began, it has become the world’s fastest growing refugee crisis with tens of thousands fleeing by land and sea daily from Myanmar’s northern Rakhine state at the peak of the emergency. So far, the emergency response from September 2017 to February 2018 has received 321 million Dollars of the 434 million required


Call on N Korea to end its nuclear programme :   Leaders of Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Australia’s Prime Minister on 18th March called on North Korea to end its nuclear programme. They also urged United Nations countries to fully implement sanctions. The call came in a joint statement issued at the end of a two day special ASEAN summit held in Sydney, Australia. It is the first time Australia has hosted the ASEAN summit.

Ayushman Bharat approved  :   The Union Cabinet has approved the launch of Ayushman Bharat -National Health Protection mission. The Scheme has the benefit cover of 5 lakh rupees per family per year. The target beneficiaries under the scheme will be over 10 crore poor and vulnerable families.

Govt decides to declare 2018 as National Year of Millets  :   The government has decided to declare 2018 as ‘National Year of Millets to boost the cultivation of millets like Ragi and Jowar on a mission mode to achieve nutritional security

Approval for admission under Disabilities Quota  :    In accordance with the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016, the percentage of seats for admission to PG medical courses to be filled up by persons with disabilities has been increased from 3% to 5%. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has granted approval to amend the regulation in order to expand the scope of persons with disabilities getting benefit of reservation

Amendments for Surrogacy bill approved  :   Union Cabinet approved moving of official amendments in the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2016. The bill, proposes to regulate surrogacy in India by establishing National Surrogacy Board at the central level and State Surrogacy Boards and Appropriate Authorities in the States and Union Territories.

Agreement on sharing earth observation data  :    India and the European Union (EU) have signed an agreement that will enable them to share earth observation data from each other’s satellites. Under this arrangement, Indian Space Research Organisation ISRO will share data from its earth observation satellites. The European Commission will provide India with free, full and open access to the data from the Copernicus Sentinel family of satellites using high bandwidth connections from data hub to data hub

World Water Forum begins in Brazil after UN warning  :    World Water Forum, the world’s biggest water-related event organized by the World Water Council, opened in the Brazilian capital city of Brasilia on 19th March. The forum conducted conference till March 23 and its mission is “to promote awareness, build political commitment and trigger action on critical water issues at all levels, to facilitate the efficient conservation, protection, development, planning, management and use of water in all its dimensions on an environmentally sustainable basis for the benefit of all life”

India wins Nidahas Trophy by 4 wickets  :    India beat Bangladesh by four wickets to win the Nidahas Cricket Trophy final in Colombo on 18th March. Dinesh Karthik was named Man of the Match for his great knock scoring 29 off just eight balls.

Ranji Champions Vidarbha Clinch Maiden title :   In Cricket, reigning Ranji Trophy champions Vidarbha have lifted their maiden Irani Trophy. On the final day of the match in Nagpur on 18th March, they beat Rest of India

Vladimar Putin:  Russian President Vladimir Putin stormed to victory in presidential election, giving him another six years in power. Putin, who has ruled Russia for almost two decades, won more than 75% of the vote according to preliminary results.
